Tiling-Led Bathroom Refurbishment
A bathroom refurbishment is only as good as the walls and floor behind the finish. Vanta Tiling handles the tiling-led side of a bathroom renovation, from strip-out and wall alterations to waterproofing, tiling and redecorating the rest of the room.
What Robert does, and what your other trades do
Robert does the tiling, can redecorate the rest of the bathroom, and does full plasterboard and wall alterations. Vanta Tiling doesn't do plumbing, electrics or fitting the bathroom suite. Those are done by your plumber, electrician or bathroom fitter, and Robert coordinates the tiling around their work so each stage is ready at the right time.
The order of work
Most bathroom refurbishments follow the same order. The old bathroom is stripped out, including old tiles and adhesive. Your plumber and electrician do their first-fix work, such as moving pipes and cables. Then come wall alterations and new plasterboard, with tile backer board where needed. Showers and other wet areas are waterproofed, and the walls and floor are tiled and grouted.
Depending on the design, some items such as the bath or shower tray are fitted before the walls are tiled, and others such as the toilet and basin afterwards. Finally the joints are sealed with silicone and the rest of the room is redecorated.
Wall alterations and plasterboard
Changing a layout, boxing in pipes, building a stud wall or forming a recess for a shower niche all happens before tiling. Because Robert does the wall work as well as the tiling, the structure behind the tiles is built with the tiling in mind: flat walls, the right boards in the right places, and space planned for niches and trims.
Waterproofing and tiling
Showers and wet areas are tanked before tiling, so water never reaches the walls behind. Walls are set out so cuts fall where they're least noticeable, and floors are checked and levelled so tiles don't crack, rock or lip.
What to decide before work starts
A refurbishment runs more smoothly when the main choices are made early: the layout and where the bath, shower, toilet and basin will go; the wall and floor tiles, and how high the wall tiles go; whether you want a niche, a feature wall or underfloor heating; who your plumber and electrician are; and paint colours for the untiled areas. Having your tiles on site before work starts helps keep the job moving.
