Underfloor Heating & Tiling
Tiles and underfloor heating work well together: tiles pass heat into the room well and feel warm underfoot. We can fit electric underfloor heating beneath the tiles, with the electrical connection and testing done by a qualified electrician.
How an electric system sits under tiles
Electric underfloor heating uses a thin heating mat or loose cable laid on the prepared floor, with the tiles fixed over it. Because the system is thin, it suits bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms where floor height matters, including electric underfloor heating in a bathroom refit. The mat or cable covers the open floor area, avoiding spaces under fixed units, baths and toilets, following the heating manufacturer's instructions.
Insulation boards
Without insulation, much of the heat goes down into the subfloor rather than up into the room, especially on concrete. Insulation boards laid under the heating help the floor warm up faster and waste less energy. On timber floors, suitable boards also help stiffen the floor before tiling.
Adhesive for heated floors
Heated floors expand and contract as they warm up and cool down. Tiles are fixed with a flexible adhesive suitable for heated floors, and the grout should be suitable too. Depending on the system, cables are embedded in a levelling layer or set within the adhesive bed, so the tiles sit flat and the cables are fully covered and protected.
Testing before and after
The heating should be tested after it's laid and again after tiling, so any damage is found before the floor is finished. The electrical connection to the supply, thermostat and floor sensor, and the testing, are done by a qualified electrician. Vanta Tiling doesn't do electrical connection.
Waiting before switching on
Switching on too early can crack tiles or weaken adhesive that's still curing. Leave the adhesive and grout to cure fully, then bring the heating up gradually: follow the adhesive and heating manufacturer's instructions for how long to wait and how to warm the floor the first time.
Choosing tiles for underfloor heating
Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone all work over underfloor heating. Larger tiles need a flat, stable base and full adhesive coverage. Movement joints at the edges of the room and across large areas give the floor room to expand, so tiles don't crack or lift when the heating is used.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you tile over underfloor heating? +
Yes. We can fit electric underfloor heating beneath tiled floors, with insulation boards, a flexible adhesive suitable for heated floors and movement joints where needed.
When can I switch it on? +
Only once the adhesive and grout have fully cured, and then gradually. Follow the adhesive and heating manufacturer's instructions for timings.
Do I need an electrician? +
Yes. The electrical connection, thermostat and testing are done by a qualified electrician. The heating mat or cable and the tiling are planned to work around that.
